An Overview Of Wireless Adapter And Its Technology

A wireless adapter is basically a hardware device that is mostly attached to a computer system or any other workstation device to allow it to connect to a wireless network of system. Before the arrival of consumer devices with in-built Wi-Fi connectivity feature, some specialized devices were required ti make use of wireless adapters for connecting to a network. Fun fact: wireless adapters are also referred to as Wi-Fi adapters.

Wireless adapters often available in a USB stick form. This device has to be plugged into the USB port of a computer system (or other similar device). The USB has now a universal standard for many sorts of accessory devices that come with plug-and-play capability to connect to a computer or a workstation setup. Wireless adapters are also used in the form of PCI network cards. They can be plugged into the PCI slot on the computer motherboard. For most occasions, they do not plug into the Ethernet port, and connect to a computer directly to a router instead. These devices can also be used as LTE wireless adapters for elevators and escalators.
  • Wi-Fi — They offer connectivity to LAN in the home or office. Generally used to add Wi-Fi to desktop computer systems, they can also retrofit older generation laptops that are not Wi-Fi equipped.
  • Cellular — Cellular wireless adapters that are also referred to as air cards have the ability to deliver the same 3G/4G wireless speed and service that your smartphone can do.
  • Bluetooth — Bluetooth gives short range transmission between computer and the mouse, keyboard, or other similar devices.
